"Stay gold" means to stay true. Innocent in his ways and living the good life Poneyboy is trying to lead. He should not fall into the criminal ways of Dally or get stuck in a low job like most of the guys end up doing. Johnny Knows what poney is really about, the writing, the innocents, etc. If you think back, poney is nothing like any of the other characters...Johnny is telling him to continue this path.
Johnny was happy because he saved a kid, he was a hero.
In doing so, he was somebody, and that is something he wanted.
For that moment, he escaped...no longer a greaser..a hero.
and you can think that Johnny is at peace having been Poney's friend.
Hope this helps a bit.

Earlier in the book, there was a poem - I think it was by robert frost. It referred to nature as "gold" - meaning clean and innocent. Johnny thought of Ponyboy the same way. Johnny died happy - first, because he realized he had done some good for the world by saving the children from the fire. He hadn't been the best example up until that point, and finally realized that he hadn't totally wasted his life.

It meant to stay pure, innocent and good. Don't let the negativity of the world make you cynical. The world isn't fair in a class society...don't let envy of someone else privileges make you hate your own life. Johnny died happy accepting responsibility for all his actions good and bad. He was a life savor on one hand and a killer on the other. He was also happy for the time he spent with Pony-boy knowing that he had one good friend in the world. Lastly, Johnny knew saving those kids from the fire was a proud moment of his life and demonstrated courage.

He was referring to the Robert Frost poem Nature's first green is gold her hardest hue to hold her early leaf's a flower but only so an hour then leaf subsides to leaf so Eden sunk to grief so dawn goes down to day Nothing gold can stay. (from memory, I may be off a bit) Like they said, stay innocent, stay hopeful.

He's referring back to the Robert Frost poem, meaning stay young. I think johnny was happy because he died doing something good, he had firends that cared, and ... thats a hard question
