I want to find out everything about my house. I have tried searching the internet but found nothing. Is there a site where I can find information about my house that is free. Newspaper articles, federal documents, anything that is of use. thank you

The only thing you can do is search all of that stuff yourself. It will take some time and legwork to find out anything that you want to know.

The first place to start is with your neighbors- Find out who has lived there the longest and then go down the line in order of tenancy. You can usually find this out through the public records that contain property tax assessment information. This report also contains the name of the owner and when they bought the house. So say that your house was built in 1966- Any of your neighbors who bought their house around that time frame probably knows who the original occupants are and could possibly tell you all about the family that lived there.

Anything else to know about the house would rely on building permits or police department records and they are not always well documented. 99% of the time you will find that the history of a house is nearly non-existant because nothing is ever documented except for the transaction of when the property was bought and sold.

Well depending on what you need to know, you can talk to the city office and have a look at the building permits registered to that property. I doubt you will find out much more than what was done to your property. If you are looking for the history of who lived there prior to you, The city will also have the information on who was paying the taxes but that's probably about it and I doubt they will give it to you anyway. The land titles department will also have the information on who owned the property but again I don't know if they will release that information either.

The County Courthouse has records of all the people that ever owned your house, when it was built, likely what was there before etc.

Ask elders in the area what they can tell you about it we love to talk about the past.

Try your local council office. They would have info on previous owners Try neighboursCheck your title deed. Write a letter to newspapers and ask for for former owners to respond.

Your county's property tax collector or property appraiser's web site will get you started. [My county in Fla has WONDERFUL web resources. You can search by the 911 address, the owner name, the parcel number, and/or aerial maps. It even has the dates, prices, methods of transfer of ownership.]
