Only if he/she has committed the sin of blasphemy against the Holy Ghost. God has accepted many dying souls in love and forgiveness who repented once they realized that they were wrong and they were afraid. One atheist who had apparently cursed God waited too late and his nurse would try to make him comfortable and as he pulled his feet up in the bed in agony she asked him what was the matter and he said "My feet's in the fire." I'm sad to say, this historically documented account says that he couldn't find God then. (before we drugged them out of consciousness) Sometimes if one rejects God enough, loudly and long enough, He will shut the door of mercy on them and they will cry and beg for mercy and He will not hear or answer. He opens the door and no man can shut it. He shuts the door and no man can open it. Do you really want to take the chance of a closed door?

I think that once someone has realized 1) that s/he has no belief in any god and 2) that it's almost certain that no such being exists, then those things would be kind of hard to forget. So my guess would be that few atheists ever return to their original religion, nor are they likely to adopt another in its place.
Having said that, I'm told that it's quite common for people in high school or college to go through a period of agnosticism -- which they may call atheism -- which lasts a few months or years, before returning to their family's religion.

I was born and raised down this path, and no way am I going back to the beginning for another path I don't believe is there. So I "ain't" returning and wouldn't want to.

No, we can't return until we go. Where do you want us to go ?
If the never-miss-church people that I know are going to heaven, I don't want to go. Nope, I'm not going the other way either. I'll be returning to nature, where I came from.

Return from what? What would I need to return to? Maybe you mean regressing back into religious delusion.

I guess. Just keep going and you will eventually go somewhere where there is no return.
Have a nice day :-)
