From selling these TV's for a living I do know that Phillips use some very cheap components. One of these very cheap components are power switches. There have been lots of problems like yours that I have had to deal with although, may I add, Phillips has now recognized the problem and are said to be "sorting" the problem. My best guess would be that it could be this. If it is a CRT (A BIG BACK TV) then it could be anything really, dodgy power convertor, vents blocked, the stanby button depressed on your remote even so without all the details it is very hard to say. If it is a LCD TV or dare I say it, a really rubbish phillips plasma (sorry, they do make good LCD's but bad Plasmas and reviews will back me up) then it would most likey be just the power switch or remote.

Try these solutions....
-Make sure you have plenty of circulation around the set (may be over heating)
-Remove all remote controls from the room (may be rogue signals)
-Unplug all equipment from set and test it (99.9% sure it is not your equipment but always a possibility)
-If this problem still occurs get it seen to, URGENTLY. (There could always be a danger of a TV blowing up when power is involved.

My advice is that if in warrenty, get it fixed, if out of warrenty, get a new one depending on costs.

There is a safety device in it called a thermal relay, it switches the TV off when it gets too hot. It is probably the power supply. Have you got someting blocking the air vents on the top or sides of the set. If not, CHUCK IT, it could catch on fire eventually. EVEN IF YOU HAVE IT TURNED OFF.

How long after you first turn it on does it do that?

Could be the TV's power converter. Cheaper to buy another one, unless yours is still under warranty. If it's more than 5 years old, just get another.

"good" timing, too. Lotsa sales for x-mas.

if its a digital model its because ur software needs updating. This is done automatically via an OAD (over air download) that is transmitted insde the TV signal. make sure your settings are swithched to 'on' for receiving this download. failing that u will need 2 take it 2 a repairer to get this done

guess crt
needs the back taking off and vacuum the dust out
also manually push the on / off button a few times to remove dust from the switch
turn it off at the mains
but please unplug and be carefull
it will then last another 5 years
