He wants to know you in the physical sense as well.... Like in a sexual setting.... maybe not at first...maybe start with dating and such...but that is what it means he wants to get to know you on a deeper level than what friends have....

Forgive me for being the simpleton. He wants to date you and has been wanting to from the very get go. My guess is he is shy.
Just a side note. Few guys ever want to be "just friends". Most of us are just hard wired that way.
