Well, first of all, that war would have been nuclear. It's hard to say who would have won because it pretty much boils down to who hits the button first. A nuclear war is going to wipe out an entire country in a matter of a few minutes.
Beyond that, I think the United States probably would have won that war. The Soviet Union had too many problems from the top down, and it was bound to collapse in on itself eventually. Combine that with warlike conditions, and there's no way it would have been able to hold itself together for very long.

It's problematic envisioning it as a ground-troop sort because of the strategy of getting thru each other's "friendly" country borders. But if you mean just missles, no doubt everybody would have lost due to the nuclear winter effect. That's why the U.S. convinced the Soviets that it would be Mutually Assured Destruction, or MAD for short.
But seriously, if such a war could have been fought during the Cuban Missle Crisis, the West would have won because most of the Russian weapons were a figment of somebody's imagination.

I have put much thought into this question and have decided that the USSR would have won if it was winter time. This is due to the fact that in the US they would have called a time out due to snow days. If it was in summer time the USSR would win becaue our offices are closed all summer. And if during vacation well do not even call our senators because we will be in out of town. But if we had a Hot War in January we would kick soon real behind. At least until they invent a holiday for January.

Short of a nuclear blowout, which means both sides would lose, the US would of won the conventional war. We are better trained and have real technology, were as soviet technology was and is still crap, except for the AK-47, and our soldiers want to be in the military and the soviet armed forces was made up of conscripts.

The United States would win because if we fought in a hot war rather than a cold war we would not have developed our nuclear weapons to the extent we had during the cold war. We would have used guns, bombs, planes and armor.

As a cold-war military medical officer, I took the Combat Casualty Care Course. I still have a T shirt from that school that reads,"War has no winners, only survivors." That would have been especially true in that case.

it wouldn't even get to ICBM's. both sides have enough power that they could cripple the other. russia and iran only have to close the persian gulf to **** up america's oil, and USA has bases right next to russia's oil fields. the two would kill each other's energy lifeline and that would create a stalemate. then USA would get a war with south america, and russia a war with asia. a world war 3 and the only clear winner would be the developing countries that are currently controlled by the powerful countries that will be cutting one another to pieces.

With nukes all would be destroyed.
Without, the Soviet Union would have been unable to hold the vast US and likely would be unable to defeat it.
The US might have been able to take the USSR, but would never been able to control its vastness.

I thought a hot war would have been what they call Mutually Assured Destruction - and would therefore have resulted in nobody winning!
