It's just a fashion. Everybody's snowboarding now because it's "cool". Besides, I've tried snowboarding a couple of years ago, and I can tell you it's dead easy. In one week I was going down black pistes. There's almost no technique compared to skiing.
I personally preffer skiing. It's much more elegant (if you know what you're doing, of course) and comfortabe. Your body faces the same way your head does as opposed to snowboarding that your body goes sideways. You don't have to take off one ski to take lifts. You can go upwards without having to take the skis off (and you don't need someone to push you or whatever).
When you ski you just face the bottom of the hill and let your legs do the work.
Of course that when you're ON the board it's fun, I won't deny that... but skiing, to me, it's way better. In a week or two anyone can snowboard fairly good. To be a good skier you need so much more than two weeks.

You know, depending on your area, I can sympathize. I used to ski in the east, and the resorts didn't have room enough for everyone, and then the snowboarders came along, sitting in little groups here and there.
Like pctorab mentioned, there are a few places that ban snowboards, Alta is one of them, Deer Valley, Taos, and Mad River Glen in Vermont. I moved to Utah, and ride Alta now, so it is a non-issue for me.
I try to remember though that not all snowboarders are like that. I have met some guys that I can't keep up with. It's basically the skateboarder mentality that comes to the ski hills...those kinds of kids that caused issues for me.

Are you guys serious?
Pctorab, you are ignorant, have you ever even ridden a snowboard? I can turn as quickly as any skier, I have just as much control and could smoke just about any skier on any run at any resort in the world (and the ones I couldn’t smoke I can keep up with no worries). I am actually quite fit and have never in my life tried to be cool. You then say you have nothing against snowboarders after you lobbed an attack against people, like myself, that you know nothing about. You in fact are the loser. Why does powder last longer at Alta or the moguls get less icy? Is there some mystical property inherit to snowboards that blow out powder faster or cause ice to form? If you were to follow after me in any condition you wouldn’t be able to tell by looking at the snow whether or not I was riding skis or a board.
Just Hangin, I’ve always enjoyed your posts and I respect what you have to say. I would like to expand on what you said. There are idiots who come to the slopes and a great many of them snowboard and a great many of them ski. When it comes down to it, these PEOPLE are idiots, what they have attached to their feet has nothing to do with it.
I find it really funny that half the answerers say that they “Have nothing against snowboarders” or “I respect them” when in the very same posts they say “seem to attract fat kids who are trying to be cool” and “I hate putting up with losers.” So, how is that respect?
The worst injury I have ever had was due to a skier, ducking a ribbon and traversing out onto a race course I was on. I didn’t hit her but I broke three ribs avoiding her. Why, in a terrain park is it always the skiers sitting on the landings of the jumps? I have been hit three times by out of control skiers and not once by a snowboarder and I’ve been snowboarding for twenty years and skiing since I was 3 (so that’s about twenty-eight years on the slopes). When it comes down to it, every complaint against snowboarders given here I can give similar examples of skiers doing similar things. Remember, people can be idiots it isn’t just snowboarders.
And to the Asker. You do realize that the skier code states that you are responsible for everyone in front of you and it is your duty to avoid them. Study up on the Skiers Responsibility Code, you might learn something. And I hate to break it to you but skiers are still the dominant presence on the hill. Some mountains are definitely the exception but there are still far more skiers out there than snowboarders

I agree with you completely. Snowboarders seem either unwilling or unable to control themselves. Snowboards can't turn as quickly as skis and they are slower, bulkier, and seem to attract fat kids who are trying to be cool. I have nothing against snowboarders who know what they're doing, but I hate putting up with the losers who think that it is everyone else's job to avoid crashing into their fat asses while they sit in the middle of a run. You would be amazed at how much nicer places like Alta, UT and Taos, NM are, simply because they ban snowboarding. Powder remains there longer, bumps are less icy, and you can rip down the hills without worrying about snowboarders going 5mph on double diamond runs.

the problem is that as a snowboarder you have to turn your head to look down the hill so this means that to one side you have amazing vision and on the other your peripheral vision is really limited.
and skiers pretty much just look down the hill and never looking to the sides of them and trust me (as both skier and snowboarder) skiers cut you off equally often as snowbarders so just be aware that maybe they didnt see you and didnt mean to cut you off...
although i will admitt that there are those snowboarders who are a bit cocky and think they can turn amazingly and cut off everybody (even other snowboarders). they dont realise that even though they can quickly get out of the way they may be scaring a beginner who will lose their concentration and get injured.....

I thinks its more annoying when all the skiers go down super slow and weave back and fourth and the cool ppl (boarders) have 2 try and get between.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!! I agree with you 100%. I hate it when they just plop down in the middle of the hill and expect you to go around them! The only time I do that is if I fall. I really wish everyone on the slopes would take more care of noticing what's going on around them, not just in their little world.

ya i totally agree! they call it a ski area for a reason here, people!!!!!! skiing is the original snow sport, and i think that some ski areas would get more buisness if they kept it stricktly a SKI area.
