My brother was chatting to my friend and she was talking about what things she loves to do, so she said "i like to go clubbing" Then my bro came back with "oh, like baby seals?" Some friends started laughing. Huh, Is this funny, and why? I don't get it.

No, this is not funny. Your brother is referring to a "sport" in Canada where people "club" a baby seal. By "club" I mean beat it over the head and kill it. There is no point to this activity, except to calm the need of these barbaric men's violence.

When I was younger I thought clubbing was exactly what your brother thought..
I was so embarrassed and felt dumb when explained to me .
It isn't funny about the baby seals but is funny on the rest

he is taking the phrase out of context saying that your friend likes to club baby seals in a violent manner, while your friend meant she loves to go to the club dancing. Its unexpected humor. I thought it was funny myself
