the U. S. would not have an professional language only like Japan and Australia. EDIT: picking an professional language is a political message that's why it particularly is often forgotten. there are dissimilar indigenous languages in the U. S. such as community American languages and Spanish grow to be spoken by employing some Californians even formerly California joined the U. S.. between the founding fathers needed Hebrew to be the professional language by way of fact it might deliver a message that human beings at the instant are self reliant from the English government.

To chato - no, 90% do not speak Spanish. Half of South America speaks PORTUGUESE, you know, in BRAZIL. Also, in South America, Surinam's official language is Dutch, French Guyana's official language is (surprise!) French, and Guyana's official language is English. In North America, Canada's official languages are English and FRENCH, and while the United States does not have an official language, it is assumed to be English. So I don't know where you're getting your number there, except for maybe pulling it out of your @ss.
To answer the question, however, my answer is no. There are way too many different languages spoken here to single one out to be "official". If you choose Spanish, then you are discriminating against all the Chinese or Japanese speakers, discriminating against all the Russian or Dutch speakers, discriminating against anyone who speaks any other language. Our "unofficial" language is English (remember, the first Congress almost voted to have German as our language), and that's what everyone who comes here should learn.
I'm fluent in French, and it offends me that when I call an automated machine, they offer English and Spanish, but not French. I'm of Korean descent, and it offends me that I can't take the driving test in my native tongue, but Mexicans can take their driving test in Spanish. I'm an immigrant, just like most Americans. But 1) I'm here legally and 2) I learned English because that's what is spoken here.

If you count the American countries (South and North America) more countries have Spanish as their official language than any other language.

No, absolutely not. Just because there are a lot of Spanish speaking people doesn't mean anything. American has always been the language that America has had. It has never been anything else. All of the immigrants who came in the 1800s had to learn how to speak English and so should everyone else. Spanish should not be our native language.

NO! English was the main language of the thirteen colonies and our founding fathers and it is also the language of the world. Just become some illegal can't speak it doesn't mean that we change as a whole to make life easier for them. They come to the US, they change and assimilate, not the other way around. Look what's happened to the EU socialist countries. Letting everybody in and giving them welfare doesn't seem like a good idea anymore.

I thought English was the official language of America. Spanish should be the 2nd official language in this country.
I have news for you bessfighter, that was back in the 19th century(largely thanks to the know-nothings of that era). We're not in the 1800s anymore(yet this place here is chock full of know-nothings, that's for sure!), this is the 21st century and times have changed whether you like it or not!
dasuberding, name one EU country that you claim to be 'socialist'. Are they socialist because you think they're too 'liberal'? The people who come into this country shouldn't be forced to speak English because a bunch of stupid xenophobes are scared that the hispanic population is going to surpass the white population want it that way. They don't come here to assimilate if they don't want to and they are free to choose whether or not they want to learn English. The assimilation thing was back in the late 19th-early 20th century(and due in part to the know-nothings of that time.) This is the 21st century, deal with it!

Gee, let me think. There are approximately 20 million people in this country that speak spanish only. There are 200 million citizens in this country that speak english. The odds are far against that. For the person that said 90% of paople here are spanish speaking. They obviously live in the barrio and have worked nothing more than manual labor and no brainer jobs. Open your eyes, this is America. Any time you speak to a civilized American, you speak English. God, what a stupid question.
