In my psychology class, we have talked about this problem. It seems that most of the time, the best method is to find a completely new study place; go outside, go to a noisy place such as a coffeeshop or park, and even listening to some up-beat music can help keep you alert and focused on your studying and homework.
Hope this helps!

There's a few factors in this. First, how long you'll be studying for. Second, if you're easily distracted.
If you just need to cram something and aren't going to be at it very long, I recommend sugar and caffeine. Truthfully, they're not the most wonderful methods when it comes to health, but they do keep you awake for a certain amount of time. But if you're going to be studying for any period longer than about an hour, try not to go this route. For sugar, natural is best (fruits, etc.) and for caffeine, something that's not soda. The sugar in sodas will probably just make you crash sooner. I usually grab a small thing of peaches and some tea, but it's really preference.
Another idea is to multi-task. Going back to food (I must be hungry), you could eat a sandwich, perhaps. It's hard to think of examples because whatever you do will have to be utterly mindless--that is, your brain still needs to be entirely devoted to your work, so whatever else your hands are doing should be something you could do with your eyes closed.
Another possibility is to try a different time of day. If you're trying to study in the evening, try early afternoon or even the morning.
What you do beforehand is important, too. Don't eat a lot of sugar even as close to a half hour before you begin, because there's the chance it'll wear off and make you want to doze. Also, try not to do anything physically straining immediately beforehand, because your body will want more to rest than anything else.
Going to the distraction thing... You could try listening to music. If you find yourself tempted to sing along, try songs without lyrics. But if the music will get your mind completely off-track, it's probably not a good idea.
You could study with someone else in the room, perhaps asking them to tell you off whenever you seem to be dozing or doing something else.
Don't lay down--you'll be more tempted to sleep, I think.
...That's about all I've got.

Try Red Bull (it comes in sugarfree) or Starbucks bottled frapuccinos (coffee is REALLY good).
