If I am correct a whiskey decanter is often made of "lead" crystal
But wine decanters are better made for glass beacuse the acidity of the wine can eat away at the crystal, causeing the wine to take on a very "mineral" tast like the water for a natural spring. My friends' father shared that with me, he owns a vineyard...so I tend to take him at face value for it.

What's inside

You use a decanter mostly for port, sherry, liquors

You decant a wine but you drink it right then. Decanting wine means you expose it to air which ofter softens the flavors in the wine and develops them
