My Christian girlfriend bought a nice Christmas tree. I'm an Atheist, according to many on this forum I should not be allowed to celebrate Christmas. But yeah, we live together, so there is a problem.

Because I love my girlfriend so damn much, I decided to accept a God for Christmas.

Christmas is on Monday and Tuesday this year.

Monday comes from the Old English Mōnandag, meaning "day of the Moon". A small selection of the Moongods is: Artemis, Coyolxauhqui, Diana, Heng-O, Ix Chel, Khons, Mawu, Selene, Sin, Soma, Tsuki-Yomi, Yarikh.

Tuesday comes from "Tyr's day." Tyr was the Nordic god of single combat and heroic glory.

This long list of Gods confuses me a little, so which is the best God to worship on Christmas?

Worship Sin - that way you will piss off the maximum number of Christians at one time, as none of them would realize you are simply worshipping another God, and instead will condemn you to Hell. And we know how much fun it is to hear about Hell on Christmas!!!!! Its cold out! I could use a little free heat!

I'm with Tirya 100% on this.

Choose a sun god, or even the sun itself. That is the purpose of Yule--the Virgin Moon Goddess gives birth to the Sun God. Basically, the Sun God returns (i.e. is reborn) each year to bring warmth and fertility to the earth.

However, why do you need to "accept a God" for the holidays? You can still celebrate Christmas and not have "accepted" a deity--the holiday has been so commercialized that "the Son" has been removed from it anyway.

As an atheist you are able to celebrate any holiday you feel like celebrating.....obviously as an atheist you are in control of your religious beliefs.....you don't need to believe in god to celebrate christmas......for many christmas is seen as just a time to get together with family and exchange gifts....I know only a few people that acknowledge that Jesus was supposedly born on the day soooo many years ago

Regardless of the origins, Christmas has become a part of modern culture apart from its religious aspects. For this reason, no specific faith is required for believing it.

About the accepting a god thing, most religions agree that following them without believing in them isn't worth much.

Given that your girlfriend is Christian, there is a decent chance that she would prefer you are an atheist as apposed to a pagan. The only god likely to please her is the Christian/Jewish God. As stated before, "accepting" him without believing in him is of little value. Christianity at least is very clear about that.

Christmas is even a germanic festivity. It is Jul dag. The longest night of the year. The church decided to put it that way because they could not force the old northern europeans to stop it. Christmas is really somewhere in Oktober.

Xmas is an old pagan mid-winter-fest. The church could not stop people celebrating it. Then the church decided to make people belief that jesus was born on that day and made it xmas [if you can't beat them, join them]
So remember xmas really a pagan holly day that xian celebrate with us

nicely in the beginning, you do no longer actual understand if he grow to be putting it up for Christmas. a super style of atheists celebrate the wintry climate solstice fairly. only ask Richard Dawkins :D besides, whether he grow to be calling it a christmas tree (no longer a solstice tree), it continues to be no longer a huge deal. i'm an atheist too, and that i celebrate christmas by way of fact i'm going to celebrate any holiday the place provides are in touch. besides, christmas is extra approximately Santa than jesus now besides. i in my opinion have self belief that Jews would desire to have the skill to celebrate christmas in the event that they p.c. to too. As Sara Silverman mentioned: "however i do no longer think of he's the son of God, i think of he grow to be nevertheless a effective boy. in case you ask your self "What might Jesus do?", He'd say supply the Jew female toys, supply the Jew female toys, supply the Jew female toys." _____________________________________ Edit: so a tactics as atheists no longer having a "wholsome" christmas, my grandmother (an atheist) has held christmas and thanksgiving consistent with annum in view that i can remember with the intention to convey to complete relatives mutually, kin coming from around the country. you do no longer would desire to have self belief in jesus with the intention to have a significant christmas. i might've indexed relatives for certainly one of my motives, yet i'm mad at maximum of them superb now...

Actually, you'd want to honor a Sun god - Mithras, for example. Since Yule and Winter Solstice is all about the rebirth of the Sun (the days start getting longer).

Hope that helps... ;)

Go with the Roman god, Saturn and their celebration for him, Saturnalia. Then you get to celebrate December 17 to January 1st! (also where Ho Ho Ho comes from)

I like Selene but its your choice who you choose or don't choose to believe in, if you like Christmas but aren't Christian you could try celebrating Yule.
