Bananas will go brown even if you don't place them in a bag. Putting them in a bag allows the methylene gas that they emit to accumulate and in the bag which accelerates the ripening process. Fruit growers add methylene gas to the fruit warehousing to accomplish the same thing.

Bananas and other fruits emit a gas called ethylene which causes the fruit to ripen. When you put them in the brown paper bag you increase the volume of the gas surrounding the fruit making the fruit ripen faster. So every once in a while check your bag for a ripened banana before they turn brown and rot.

putting unripe bananas in a bag will help them to ripen. If you leave them too long, I guess they will rot.
