Windows offers a free anti-virus and anti-spam program called Windows Live One-Care. Obviously its not as good as Norton or McAfee, but it usually sufficient for most people. But I think you have to download a toolbar to get it. I use it myself.

McAfee is good. Our computer guy told us that Norton has a lot of problems. Whatever you get, be sure to get the whole package with spyware, spam blocker, anti-virus, firewall and etc

The paid for software is slightly more secure but for the difference its not really worth the money. Freeware Antivirus also starts up faster as well.

I use this great one and have never had a single problem
