Seed diets are nutritionally inadequate for pet birds (as opposed to wild birds). Seed diets are high in fat and low in the vitamins, minerals, and protein that birds need to stay healthy. While birds can survive temporarily on seed diets, in time chronic malnutrition will compromise their immune systems, and they will get sick.
Pelleted diets are specifically formulated to meet the nutritional needs of pet birds, containing the right balance of vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, and fats. There are a number of different pellets available at your local pet store or veterinary clinic. It is best to avoid pellets that are brightly colored, and opt for the pellets that do not contain food coloring. Ask your veterinarian which type of pellets is best for your bird.

Lots of birds do this. It's more stimulating for them to dig to the bottom and find that elusive tastiest of the tasty seeds...in their minds at least....much funner to dig than to eat off the top. I find it useful to not fill the dish all the way, as most of the seed (or pellets) in a full dish end up on the floor.
As for breeding...I would NOT get a nest box unless you want to encourage breeding and you know what you are doing and want them to breed...this is not a light thing to do...it takes lots of knowledge to breed birds, and can be dangerous to the hen. That being said, she still might lay an egg, but if you don't want to breed don't encourage it with a nestbox, I would strongly advise against breeding unless you are very well knowledged and ready for it.

Birds tend to change what kinds of seeds they are craving. They go through the cup of seeds to find the ones they want and the seeds end up going on the floor. Hope this helps.

Can you handle these keets? I have some I spoiled and take out of the cage and spend time with.
If I don't take them out when they want, one of them throws a temper tantrum and throws all the seed out.
I've never had one nest in the food cup. Usually if I don't have a nest, they lay the eggs on the bottom.
I'm going with temper tantrum.

if your female is kicking seed out of her seed bowl and sitting in it than this is pretty obviouse!she is either pregnant or is ready to breed. it is not because of the seed she has been eating!you should get her a nesting box so that she won't use the bowl as her nest anymore. but you can't move her right now because she has already found a place to lay her eggs. trust me, i have five parakeets who do this all the time.

Probably trying to nest. If she is a female and you have a male, no doubt they have mated, and now she wants to nest...Buy a nest at the pet store, with some sort of nesting material..otherwise she will pick herown feathers out to make a nest....If you want to find out the sex of the bird, catch them in your hand, turn them over...feel the pevic area, if the bone of the pelvic is wide then its a female, if its narrow, its a male..usually males will be more vibrant in color than the female...

Maybe she's not satisfied with the food? Try giving her the best tasting seeds you can find. Sorry I can't help much more.

Sounds like she's having a good time or trying to entertain you. Or she's tired of that particular seed.

Maybe she doesn't like the seed that you have put in there. Have you changed brands of food lately?
