I have an 11 year old son and a 7 year old daughter, we live in a good sized apartment and are considering adding a dog to our family. We'd prefer a smaller one but I am unsure about what breed would be best to look for. Personally, I'd prefer to check out the local Humane Society, but would like to geta general idea before starting my search.

small dogs arent really good with kids expecailly younger kids. kids tend to be rough with them and because of their size the kids can easily hurt it, and as for your question any dog is good with kids as long as they have been raised around kids or if you get it young so it will be use to you and your family a good size that you probalby want is like the size of a cocker spanial or something

I could tell you about dozens of dog breeds that are great around small children. But it's only a general guideline; how the dog is raised means the world.

Go to the humane society and check things out. Spend time with the dogs (bring the kiddies) before making a selection. Grill the staff about the dogs.

But please keep in mind that few dogs have an energy level low enough to be happy in an apartment of any size, yet be tolerant of high energy children.

If you're looking for a small breed, any type of terrier mix are good dogs. If you go to your humane society, make sure you choose a younger dog. Especially with having kids, you don't know what the dog has been thru before you guys so just be safe. I had a min. schnauzer. They are the best dogs ever because they are small, smart, playful and they don't shed. I also was a vet tech for 6 yrs and those are the ones I always love to come across.

Basenjis! They are GREAT with children of all ages. They are a smaller dog, about the size of a Beagle. They do well in smaller homes or apartments. They are short haired dogs, really are maintenance free except that they do love to go for walks can be energetic. They also don't bark even though they are not considered mute. Their bark sounds like a Yodel or a yell and they do make various other noices that can be a little shocking when you first hear them. Even though it is not a small dog, greyhounds are also very good with kids and they also do well in small homes or apartments.

The breeds developed for bird-hunting seem to have the best dispositions overall for kids. But a golden retriever or Labrador might be a bit big for your living situation. A springer spaniel might fit your needs better. I'd avoid cockers: you could get lucky, but the runted breeds like this can sometimes be a bit skittish.

I prefer labs for children, but whatever you decide get a puppy and then it will grow up with the children be used to them and be a major protector to them. As far as little dogs, cocker spaniels used to be a great choice, but with all the breeding of them some of them can be rather nasty. Check with your local shelter see if they have any pups or young dogs and when you go take the children. If you see one you like they will help you to decide if the dog will get along with them. They will evaluate them with the dog before they will agree to let you adopt it.

That depends on a lot of factors such as, home size, allergies, how much exercise you can give it, etc.
Take this breed selector quiz at dogbreedinfo.com and it will choose the breeds that are best for your family based on the answers you give. Then click on each breed for more information about temperament etc.

I've heard beagles are great with kids and are a good family pet in general. Good for you for checking the pound. Pound dogs are awesome. I'm sure you'll find the perfect pet.

I'd say a Maltese or Poodle. They are both extremely kind, fun, sweet, playful breeds. They don't shed so they are good for people with allergies. These breeds are very friendly and playful. I highly suggest them!

I would recommend a lab retriever. They are great with kids, smart, and easy to train. They are great to have for walks, or just to chill with. And they don't get too awfully big. About 60pds. I have one and he weighs in at almost 80, but he's old and fat. Good luck!!
