Artists are people, their primary function is to live their own lives.
Art is what the artist creates, and art is also what you experience when interacting with that creation.
The primary function of art is to be. Whether artistic creations provoke thought, display beauty, inspire emotion or just get ignored is besides the point.

As an artist myself, I'd have to say both....some of my works are to provoke thought, others are to display beauty.
Some of my works done to provoke thought are Haiku Collage works.
Some that just display beauty are my horse paintings.
It really just depends on the artist, the mood at the time the piece is being created, other factors.

Artist standard function is neither of those issues, an artist standard function is to confirm issues as they modern themselves to the artist. then a genuine artist will take the priority and take a investigate an reflect not basically the priority by their artwork artwork yet in addition the thoughts and suggestions it invoked interior the artist. Painters are given a job paint this and that they basically try to draw it. a genuine Artist, on the otherhand paints it its concern, yet does so attempting to duplicate the thoughts and suggestions the priority had on the artist. by making use of doing so effectively, it as a outcome shows the actual surprising thing concerning the priority and provokes suggestions. working example in case you have been to color a portrait of a say a girl, some human beings will basically draw the lady and take a investigate an make it appear like the female, might to boot basically take a image. that may not artwork. on the different hand an artist ought to seem on the comparable lady, and spot that the female is a mom, that loves her babies, and being a mom thats been a complication reason in keeping with possibility she is a unmarried mom. if he can seize and positioned across this manner of imagary of not basically a girl yet a suffering unmarried mom who might do something for her babies, that's artwork. the main suitable artist can positioned across this varieties of thoughts by their artwork.

A true artist can do both, but it doesn't necessarily need to display beauty---to provoke thought and cause an emotion (sadness, hunger, melancholy, hope, anger, etc.)!

Art is to 'give permanence of expression to the artists feelings about the world'. That's a slightly paraphrased quote from "My name is Asher Lev" by Chaim Potok. Read it; you'll find that art needs to be for it's own sake, otherwise it is 'whore' art, something created without the pure intention of showing emotion. In the begining of the novel, Asher's Mother tells him to paint the world pretty, but he cannot because the world that he sees is not pretty. He draws a frightening portrait of his Rabbi because to him, the Rabbi is a controlling, omnipotent figure who is interfering too much in his life. He paints portraits of Christ being crucified (which is considered somewhat sacreligious for Jews of his sect) because he says that his own religion does not provide a powerful enough medium to convey what he wished to express.
Art is only for the artist to feel vindicated that he has found within himself the controll and the desire to bring it to a reality that could be understood and passed to another person.

That's an entirely personal decision. I enjoy doing art for children more than anything else. I have done art for thought but for me, art is a relaxation as well as an addition to income.
I would say go by the mood that you are in. Paint to please yourself unless you have a paying customer. Then just paint to make them happy and be glad when they are.
Many times I've painted for others and been dissatisfied with the results personally but never have I had a dissatisfied customer.
Just go with the flow and enjoy yourself.
