amu abdul, a good answer. I would add that certain Egyptian and Essenic influences have been noted in an effort to trace Jesus`s religious affiliations. Certainly `mystery school` practises are contained within the bible stories. Interestingly "Damascus" was a name by which the Dead Sea community was known. James (the brother) was certainly affected/involved with the Essenes, and 40 days in" the wilderness" is another pseudonym for the Essene community.Given the strong childhood exposure to Egyptian practises, and the Moses legacy, the only certainty is that Jesus was not mainstream, which no doubt contributes to the Biblical `denial` that he attracted.

He was born and raised as a Jew. However, it was inevitable that, in view of the need for his words to reach everyone, Judaism in the form of the Mosaic law would have to be modified.
If everyone who wanted to follow Jesus was required to obey the law of Moses, the impractical nature of doing so would become apparent. Imagine if everyone who accepted Christianity in whatever form went to Jerusalem 3 times a year (an action prescribed by the Mosaic law), there would be chaos in Jerusalem when billions of people tuned up. That's just one point. There are many aspects of the law that would be impractical for the whole world to follow.
So, Jesus was a Jew, but he did not require that his followers ultimately should obey the Mosaic law. A consideration of John chapter 4 shows this, especially verses 21-24.

Jesus did not have a religion, he had a belief and a phylosophy that he lived by, like buddah - we can have that same belief without having to follow a tradition - its called spirituality!
