If you asked him, and he chose not to tell you, then it's really none of your business. Leave the man his privacy and respect his right to it.

How was his weight before? Did he have 30 lbs. or more to spare?
Cause' if he did, he is probably way better off, of course.
But sometimes when a person has any kind of joint problem, they send themself a message, self hypnosis wise, to lose weight. Without even realizing they have done that.
Afterall, a limp can cause a person to exercise less throuhout their day, then maybe their craving for food would go down some as well.
The human body has many ways of protecting itself.

Rapid weight loss can be a symptom for many many things. The limp is suspicious though. Here's a thought, though I don't know if it applies -> would he have had some surgery recently? Sometimes, people don't ever want to tell anybody they have had surgery. And, b/c surgery can be traumatic - they may not be forthcoming even when suffering from post surgery symptoms/problems. How long has he been like this? Good luck!

Your friend obviously has some issues going on that he doesnt feel like sharing right now. Just let him know that you are there to support him. Try not to always mention the fact that he has lost alot of weight and walks with a limp. in time he may share is issue with you.

Bring him into your home, if he is your friend. Tell him that you are there for him and would like to talk. Tell him that you have noticed that he is losing weight, ask him again and don't give him the opportunity to change the subject. He probably is testing you before he feels comfortable in telling you the truth. Friends need friends like you and I'm glad that you care enough to ask. Hope your friend is okay. Don't insinuate that he has HIV. Let him tell you.

If it was that easy to predict a disease by a discription of a limp losing weight and eating healthy. I'm sure plenty of people would be presumed infected!

I don't think anyone could just "guess" what is wrong, but it seems obvious that your friend values his privacy!
Seems like you should just be available for your friend--he probably needs your support and friendship.
Good luck!
