If you are, what did you study during college? Did you want to be a doctor the moment you got into college, or did something happen that made you to switch your original major? How was med school? What kind of doctor are you? How long did it take you to be the kind of doctor you are? what is your salary? Is it a stable job? are you happy with your choice? if not, what do you wish you majored in instead?
I'm struggling about majors. I'm thinking about doing a pre-med program, but i have no idea what it is like? How did you know that you want to be a doctor in the first place? what kind of motivation did you have? Is it a satisfactory profession?
serious answer please
thanks

Not YET a doctor, but if you give me a few years, I will be. Let me tell you about my experience...

Q1. What did you study during college?
A1. Molecular cell biology with a double major in Southeast Asian studies at UC Berkeley.

Q2. Did you want to be a doctor the moment you got into college, or did something happen that made you to switch your original major?
A2. I've wanted to be a doctor since I was 5 years old. I have never been ambivalent about this, so I doubt the seriousness of "prospective" pre-meds -- either you want it, or you don't. And if you want it, you better want it badly. I did a double major because I liked the subject, and med schools like humanities -- shows you're well-rounded.

Q3. How was med school?
A3. Haven't gotten there, yet. But I'm not expecting it to be a cakewalk.

Q4. What kind of doctor are you?
A4. I'm en epidemiologist right now. But I want to do family medicine (primary care), or infectious disease.

Q5. How long did it take you to be the kind of doctor you are?
A5. I'm 26. Add 4 years of med school, plus 3 years of residency, and i'll be ready to go by the time I'm 33.

Q6. What is your salary? Is it a stable job?
A6. I make about $45k right now as an epidemiologist. As a medical resident, I'll make about $35k. As a primary care physician, I'll make about $150-200k. And yes, there is a big need for primary care. Epidemiology is a safe bet, too.

Q7. Are you happy with your choice? If not, what do you wish you majored in instead?
A7. Majoring in biology was the single biggest mistake of my life. And considering I almost married a felon, that's a HUGE mistake. I speak honestly. I want to be a doctor. But majoring in bio is keeping me out of med school. Competition among pre-meds is tough, and the stress is literally maddening. You can major in anything and get into med school as long as you do the med pre-req classes. I think if I had to do it all over again, I'd have majored in botany (bio, I know, but it's not a pre-med major), or I'd have stuck to Southeast Asian studies only.

Q8. How did you know that you want to be a doctor in the first place?
A8. When you're 5, you think, "I wanna be a doctor when I grow up," because it looks neat or fun. Twenty years later, it still holds that same appeal. I can't picture myself doing anything else.

Do you love science? Do you love math? (There is a lot of Chemistry involved). I used to stay up late at night and read medical articles even when I was in High school. Do you LOVE helping people? Are you squeemish? And most importantly are you a VERY hard working and exemplary student? Think about theese questions and you'll have your answer.
Good luck to you, whatever you decide.
