Yes in severe cases of acne it can help. But I think many women just take the pill and then uses skin problems as an excuse. I have a pimple or two sometimes but I'm not going to mess up my body by taking a synthetic hormone. I used to be on the Pill but I still got a pimple or two, always small ones, and then when I dropped the Pill everything was out of control like never before. It took me a year to finally get my skin and periods completely normal again. Instead of looking at acne holistically, by investigating diet problems, skin care and so on, they just pop the Pill. Yes, it helps but they can't be on the Pill forever, can they? So in the long run it only masks the real problem and actually is detrimental to the skin, and liver especially.

This sounds silly!! It's gotta be an excuse - although thinking about it, it does have hormone in it - which i suppose is part of skin and growing up etc.
In fact, Controversy.... Ive just looked on a few sites and found that it can do more harm than good to your skin - a side effect of the pill can be dark pigments in skin. The website below quotes:
Side Effects...
"Skin changes - sometimes a dark pigment can form on parts of the face for a few people"

It's to do with balancing the hormones. Some women have hormone inbalances which can cause spots, heavy periods etc and the pill helps balance hormones so in a sense can help with the skin.

GPs will prescribe contraceptive pills for bad acne problems. In some cases to the under 16s, I think parental consent is needed in these cases.

An ex of mine went on the pill under instruction from her GP to clear her skin. Adolescents have qeird hormones running amok within them, and the pill in her case was used to balance the hormones, and therefore help keep her skin clear.

This is completely true, I went to my GP for information on very heavy and painful periods. He could have given me medicine for this but actually recommened going on the pill called Dianette (you could yahoo it) this is specifically for treatment of acne and is also a contraceptive. I was only 16 at the time and not sexually active it was purely for periods and acne, after 8 weeks all my spots had cleared up.

I started the pill to control cramps that were out of control and my doctor told me that it would also clear up my skin because it would balance my hormones out or something to that effect. Its true, I haven't had a legitimate pimple in a long long time.

Many women take birth control pills to regulate their menstrual cycle and control the hormones that cause acne.

no it is not an excuse
excessive amount of androgens in women can lead to acnea, and one of the treatment possibilities is oral contraceptives
I'm a dr., and I'm also using oral contraceptives for the same problem (must say it did me good)
