If she enjoys a drink, get her a bottle of wine with some nice glasses. That way it can be a gift she can use to entertain during the season.
If not, then maybe offer to take her for dinner and a movie. That is what we are doing with my boyfriend's sister and her fiance. You get to spend quality time and there are no big letdowns. After all, she agreed to go.

OK...if it were anyone else, I'd say...just wish her merry Christmas and forget it. But since she is your mother-in-law (and I use to have the m.i.l.from hell myself, god rest her soul), I'd say either make something for her that you know she would like (a cake, cookies, sew something, etc.) or get a beautiful silk scarf or ladies embroidered hankerchief. A woman with everything can never have too many scarves! These are classy things that really don't cost an arm and a leg. Just tell her you know she didn't want anything, but you saw it and thought of HER !!! Greetings to you and yours for the holiday and Godloveya for trying to please the old broad.

This may sound a bit hokey . . . The Sharper Image sells a puzzle that is the original front page of The New York Times on the day the person for whom you buy this gift was born. My husband and I purchased this gift for my father-in-law for Christmas this year.
This is a unique idea . . . bet ya' no one else will think of that!
Good Luck and Merry Christmas!

Well that's easy, she said it all! Lol! But still, a lil bit of something is better than nothing. I'd say, buy her a christmas plant or something, with a card on it. Or you can make some christmas cookies or cakes with a card. Something meaningful, yet sweet and simple.

Give certificates of your time, such as cleaning, shopping, lunch out together. Or something that one can use or do often in life, no matter how much one has, such as movie tickets, gift certificates to restaurants, hair cuts/styling certificates, MASSAGE or spa certificates, donations to charities on her behalf, classes to learn different things, like a cooking or flower arranging class. And then there are the more personal gifts, like photographs (can arrange in scrapbooked style or be digitally arranged), hand-made gifts of all kinds. Just some things I have done.

A crystal vase. Its beautiful, elegant, and no one can ever say that they have too many vases. You could also get a really really nice Christmas ornament...it goes on the tree immediately and everyone admires how thoughtful her daughter in law is. A spa day is always nice, and while expensive, she'll definitely appreciate it.
