I have a 5 and 3 year old and really don't want to give it to them (for several reasons). Does anyone else not get their kids a flu shot?

When I was growing up, my mom only got the flu shot for us once that I can remember. And it hurt. I think she preferred not to do it because pharmaceutical companies produce flu vaccines on speculation and you can still contract a strain of the flu virus even if you have had a flu shot. So you could pay the vaccine fee and still have your child get sick.

Most parents do not receive influenza vaccine for themselves or their children but if we could solve our manufacture and supply problems the standard in the United States would be universal vaccination. I would encourage you to immunize your children although I understand that confusion and misunderstanding prevents many people from doing so. Influenza should not be thought of as the 'flu' which is a vague overused and misused term. Influenza is a very serious illness which leads to up to 50 000 deaths and 500 000 hospitalizations yearly in the US. We are overdue for an influenza B epidemic which when (and it is when not if) it occurs could multiply these numbers 10 fold which is frightening. If you doubt this research the influenza epidemic of 1917-1918 which was more deadly than any war in the 20th century. It is not to late to immunize so please reconsider and immunize yourself and your children. Due to improvements in the manner in which it is manufactured and purified influenza vaccine has not been associated with side effects other than the possibility of a sore arm for some 20 years. The only caveat would be that I do not recommend the nasal form of the vaccine as this may cause illness in recients and others exposed to them who are at risk of the complications of influenza. If you hear of horror stories after receiving the vaccine ask when it was and it is almost always prior to 1980. Only the 'swine flu' vaccine of 1976 was linked to neurologic problems and even that is uncertain and we no longer manufacture it by that method anyway. I will be happy to answer any additional or specific questions that you may have or to send you an article on influenza illness and vaccine. You may also wish to consult the website for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia which is cdc.gov.
