Hello whitepup

Actually you can carry as many as 14 clubs at one time , any more and you are in violation of the rules. But simply playing open gold for fun you can carry as many as you like.

Now the typical numbers of the clubs are the 3,4,5,6,7,8,9 irons
pitching wedge, sand wedge, lob wedge, putter and the 1 , 3 and 5 woods.

However its pretty rare to see a set like this anymore, most golfers have dumper their long irons (3,4,5) and replaced them with hybrid clubs which are a cross between irons and woods.

A lot of golfers only like to play with the odd irons and or even irons. Its your choice.

The maximum number clubs permitted under the rules of golf is 14. The selection of clubs is the player´s choice. The "woods"(nowadays made of metal) are normally the uneven numbers :-1 3 5 7(rarely 9 &11): the irons 1-9 (usually for handicap amateurs 3-9 and then the wedges( normally named rather than numbered) Pitching wedge (48 degrees loft) Gap wedge (51, 52 or 53 degrees) Sand wedge (54,55 or 56 degrees)and a Lob wedge 58 or 60 degrees and finally the putter.

There are many possible clubs but you can only carry 14 on them.

Woods are used to drive the ball the farthest. Hybrids are a new thing that are crosses beteween irons and woods. The long irons (the ones with low numbers) are hard to hit for people with average or even above average and low swing speeds. Irons are to hit the ball far, but with accuracy. Then wedges are high lofted used from close distances and they are the most accurate.

The higher the number of a type of club, the more loft it has and less far it goes.

Woods: 1-wood(Driver), 2-wood(strong 3-wood), 3-wood, 4-wood, 5-wood, 7-wood, 9-wood, 11-wood, 13-wood, 15-wood.

Hybrids: Replace hard-to-hit long irons so the number of the hybrid has the same loft as that numbered iron. Include: 1-hybrid, 3-hybrid, 4-hybrid, 5-hybrid, 6-hybrid, 7-hybrid, 8-hybrid, 9-hybrid, PW (Pitching Wedge) Hybrid, All other wedges in hybrid form.

Irons go the same way.

Wedges come in lofts from 46 degrees to 64 degrees. There is even a 73 and 80 degree wedge that I've seen.

You also have to carry a putter which has a pretty flat face, about only 3 degrees loft, used for gently rolling the ball on the green.

14 are allowed as long as they conform to Royal & ancient Rules of golf Rule 4, page41 and Appendix II, page 142.
Since you can use any club, anywhere "Through the Green" (ie anywhere on the playing area),including the greens, there is no requirement to even have a putter. Likewise on the tee no requirement for woods or drivers.
So one could even play golf with 14 identical clubs if so wished, although his chances of winning would be drastically reduced.

there really is no such thing as an exact makeup of a "full" set. the rules prohibit a player from carrying more than 13 clubs. Normally, the "core" set will be irons #3-9, plus a Pitching wedge and a sand wedge, 3 Woods (Driver plus 3 wood and 5 wood) and 1 putter.

Hi you can have a maximum of 14 clubs in your bag including a putter & they are numbered 1-9 (pw pitching wedge) (sw sand) (lw lob) then 1-9 in woods. The higher the number the shorter the club length & more lofted the club, the lower the number the further the distance can be achieved. hope this helps Ted.
