I drive a 2006 Explorer 4x4 XLT.
I love it. I upgraded from a 2000 Explorer XLT.
I get 12 to 16 mpg.
No problems with it yet (knock on wood).
It is great in the winter with the 4x4. I like the newer model better as it is a bit wider than the older models. I like mine also for the 3 row seating which completely folds down and the side curtain and side impact air bags for safety features.
I also like that it has the running boards on the model I chose.
It is about the same size as a Ford Ranger truck as that is the frame of it. I guess I am slightly biased as I have had 2 Explorers now and really would not go back to a car.

My father had an exploder and I had an escape... after driving both of them, I would definitely recommend the escape over the exploder. They are decent cars but they are Fords, so there may be some "quirks" to them... we've always been a Ford family and have had decent luck with most of the cars. There is always an exception to that rule, but generally Fords are reliable cars. The smaller suv (escape) will do much better on gas for you too.

I'm a Ford Salesman, so I'll tell you they're a great buy. Completely re-designed in the safety department. It's a very safe car. The gas mileage isn't outstanding, but it is an SUV. They have good factory warranties on them and you can also purchase an extended warranty on them. I'd recomend that unless you were planning on trading it in in the next year or two. Let me know if you have any questions.

I just pick an 06' up about a month ago. It's a great truck it not that great on gas. About 15 mile per gallon when you drive locally.. 20 to 25 for the highway. It cost around $40 to fill-up. So I guess it was worth it. I have no problems and it's perfect for what I need it for. Hope this helps!
Happy SUV Hunting!

I LOVE my '06 Explorer! I do suggest upgrading to the DVD navigation if you have a tendency to get lost like me! The vehicle is roomy, rugged and yet fun! Plus the new design is just outstanding! Although if you are trying to be gas conscious may I suggest the Ford EDGE. However; gas hasnt been that big of deal for me even living in California. Let me know what you decide.

i looked at the explorer also but ended up buying a new durango. the explorer seemed to have poor quality plus it is basically the same old design that ford has been using for years now. drive a durango and an explorer and you will understand what i am talking about.
