My 6 month old basset hound has recently starting making a strange cough-like noise. It sounds like she is trying to clear out her nasel passages by pushing air back through. My 8 year old cocker spaniel has allergies and she gets the wattery eyes, poofy nose, etc, but the basset hasn't and doesn't have these symptoms. She doesn't open her mouth like she's trying to cough something up. She doesn't do this very often, maybe once or twice a day for about 10 seconds. She doesn't seem physically distressed over it.

Has anyone had a similar experience? What did you do? Please don't say go to the vet, I already have an appointment scheduled, I was just hoping it was something we could fix at home.

Basset hounds are nose oriented dogs. Its their characteristic to sniff things so she may have something up her nose. I call it back sneezing like us sniffing trying to clear our sinuses. It could be a sign of allergies or something up its nose like dust or carpet fibers. It isn't harmful to the dog, I have 9 and at one time or another they have all done it. It just scares us.Dogs are the same as us if they are having sinuse problems or allergies even colds. Go to www.peteducation.com they have a lot of information on pets by Dr's Foster and Smith.Their answers are the same as my vets.

My dog everyonce in a while does this but he always makes this swollowing noise (like he has a swore throat). When he feels this way he cant sleep. This will go on for about a day then it goes away and hes fine. Ive taken him to the vet and there wasnt anything they can do. I would think if she doesnt seem bothered by it then theres not much to do. But then again I am not a vet. Since you already have an appt see what they have to say.

it particularly is a threat that she has hypersensitive reactions...some canines do what's observed as opposite sneezing and it appears like your description above. My canines try this while they get particularly excited or pull too annoying on their leash, etc. here is a few information. i got here upon for you approximately opposite sneezing: canines have a topic we call a 'opposite sneeze.' It gets its call by way of fact the dogs quickly pulls air into his nostril, while in a 'usual' sneeze, the air is readily pushed out during the nostril. in case you witness a dogs having a opposite sneeze it could seem alarming, besides the fact that this isn't any longer a risky subject, and there are no unwell outcomes. The dogs is thoroughly usual formerly and after the episode. in the time of a opposite sneeze, the dogs will make speedy and long inspirations, stand nevertheless, and strengthen his head. a noisy snorting sound is produced, which will make you think of the dogs has some thing caught in his nostril. A opposite sneezing episode can final for various seconds to a minute. the reason of a opposite sneeze is unknown. it might desire to nevertheless be hypersensitive reactions so verify w/ your vet if it maintains. stable success!!

All of my dogs have done that at one time or another. I don't think its anything serious. It may be allergies, but I doubt the vet will prescribe anything for it. The type of allergies we have had the most trouble with are skin allergies. Our golden gets hives in the spring, we use Benedryl.
