Histamine 1 receptor blocers also known as antihistamines tend to make people sleepy. The worst is diphenhydramine or Benadryl. Loratadine (Claritin and Alavert) advertises that it is not sedating but this is not correct. Fexofenadine (Allegra) is not sedating even at higher than typical dosages and it is the antihistamine used by NASA for this reason. Desloratadine (Clarinex) is the active metabolite of loratadine and it is not very sedating. There are a few over the counter sleep aids which contain diphenhydramine but although it will put you to sleep it disturbs sleep cycles and deprives you of rest so it should not be used for this purpose and I would prefer than diphenhydramine had been removed from the market 20 years ago.

I think it varies from person to person... When I take antihistamines it makes me sleepy as well as my 4 year old daughter, when it comes to my 3 year old son, it makes him super-hyper... And for those of you who are tsk-tsking at the fact that I have given my young children antihistamines, they were Doctor prescribed...

depends what brand they are. zirtec dont make u sleepy, but phenergan does. there are many brands out there that will and wont.
