Call the local County Courthouse and see if they have a Family Law Facilitator. These are lawyers appointed by the courts to help with issues such as custody and child support. They work for you for free, advising you on the steps required to take for family law issues. You'll have to have a good reason for the father not gaining JOINT custody. Even in the event of a joint custody order, you can still get child support. Are you married to the father? Is this as a result of a divorce? I don't have enough details to explain. I have 2 sons, 2 different dads, 1 divorce, 1 not in the picture. Different situations call for different solutions. Good Luck

Unless the other parents is a total monster you better get a lawyer. People will fight custody tooth and nail. Unless you have legal advise and representation you will get your *** kicked.

It is also an emotional issue. You need the adivse and perspecitve of a univolved third party who is able to see and react objectively. For this reason it would be stupid for even a lawyer to represent themselves in something like this.

Although these things cost money--the best interests of your child are certainly worth any sacrafice you have to make. And a lot of these lawyers are often good about payments and also getting the other side to be ordered to pay a portion of the attorney fees in appropriate cases.

lots of state and county courts have seminars and classes to help you get through custody issues without an attorney, but it takes a lot of time and you have to make sure you do everything right if you have no attorney to help check that stuff. look up paralegal services in the phone book for your area--some law clinics can help, and sometimes law students will help you for the experience they gain.

good luck!

You must find away of discussing with father privately reassuring him that you can take a proper care of the boy and he can have access to him when he wants to see his son.
