When I eat or drink ice cream, lots of cheese, etc. is when I notice it mostly. I notice a slight swelling in my throat area. Not on the inside, but it seems like just under neath the skin area, if this makes sense. I don't usually get rashes, but I do notice the swelling 'sensation' in that area. I don't remember getting any of this stuff when I was younger. Could it be that things are being added to the dairy lately that are causing these symptoms? Maybe if I tried organic dairy, that might be more helpful.

a true allergic reaction will result in swelling in the esophagus making it impossible to eat or drink or breathe for that matter, most people do not have allergies to milk. What they do suffer from is a lactose intolerance, and this usually develops over time, one day you can drink milk, no problem, the next you become intolerant and you develop symptoms such as severe bloating, abdominal cramping, diarhea and even nausea and vomiting. If you experience such symptoms around drinking milk, eating ice cream or cheese or yogurt, then you likely have an intolerance. There are tablets available over the counter that will help you digest the lactose, or you can get lactose free milk. Suggest that if you suspect a lactose intolerance, simply remove all dairy from your diet for a week, then reintroduce, if the symptoms return, you have an intolerance and should avoid milk products.

Trust me, you'll know. I am "lactose intolerant" -- that means, when I eat most any sort of dairy product (milk, ice cream, cheese, most yogurts), I have to take a lactic acid supplement. If I don't, I have about two hours before I have severe stomach cramps, bloating, gas and diarrhea. It's awful. I have a friend who's lactose intolerance makes him throw up for hours. Depending upon the allergy that you have... you may just get itchy or you may have hives or swelling issues, but I think that you will know pretty easily if you do. Perform a little experiment on yourself -- two days eat the same foods but on one of the days, include some dairy and see how you feel. Good luck.

If the problem is a true allergy, you may react with hives, rash, anaphylaxis, diarrhea, shortness of breath, ezcema, abdominal bloating, gas, edema of the lips or tongue. This is a partial list. If what you're really getting at is lactose intolerance, those symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal bloating, intestinal gas with or without severe pain, flatulence and vomiting. An allergy is not the same as an intolerance.

One of my kids had an allergy to milk and we had a blood test done for her because her eczema went all itchy when she ate a certain thing. Then we found out she was allergic to milk.

If you eat or drink dairy, & then get sick, chances are very good, you are allergic or are lactose intollerance.
