It's rebellion against the norm. Today's youth do not have a generation or ideas of their own to grasp onto for rebellion (vietnam hippies, punk rock, grunge), so they take pop culture from another generation and make it "cool".

Not so much that, it is just the hard core truth is not being taught today. Everything is live for today and don't worry about tomorrow and there is no such thing as Hell and sin. There is very little positive example given either. Hollywood is producing trash and then pushing it saying your not anything unless your gorgeous and rich and you need to copulate with everybody you meet or your just not with today's style. Parents today carry a huge piece of the guilt too. Look at what we show our kids .... "You don't have to go to Church honey , You can just make up your own religious rules and there is no real authority on Earth , ... your your own authority so what you decide is right or wrong is what is right or wrong" Just garbage like that

I thought it was actually less these days than back in the 1990s. Some kids like to be edgy and wear t-shirts like that for shock value. I read tons of serial killer/cult books as a teen but I never admired those people. I love 'scary' things and reading about a real 'scary' person is just something I enjoy.
