...and do they?

- I ask in all humility (not!)

I grew up thinking Roman Catholic priests were not the sharpest pencils in the box, but at least their training includes philosophy, logic, history, (often) classical civilisation, and any number of humanity and science options, btu the Imams....?

If they know only the contents of one or two holy books (learned by rote) and don't study the general literature of mankind, then sorry, they are sadly lacking. You need more qualificatins than that these days to work at McDonalds

Yes there are guidelines to this. Nobody in Islam could preach publicly if he or she is NOT married. This shows that Islam require knowledge in life and current issue not just focusing on the Holy Qur'an alone. One can't preach love if he himself is not loved. How can he lead if he himself is low in knowledge. But there are times that a young boy could also be Imam. That if he is concidered MASTER in religion at his age and approve by many not just 1 person. Some boys have this ability. But these senario is quite rare actually. The reason this is allowed is to show others that age in not important in Islam. You can be old and wise but that doesn't mean you know the right stuff. Islam teach to respect even small kid who have vast knowledge.

Muslims, period are required to "seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave".it is true that Muslims hold the revealed word has the highest form of knowledge, because it comes straight from The G'D, however any secular/academic interest that a Muslim persues it should be sought with excellence as the goal.

My dear brother, for your info, an imam is just someone who lead the prayers. Any Muslims can be an imam. Be it a lawyer, doctor, engineer, philosopher, driver, cook or whatever their profession is.

Most Muslims have a far wider knowledge than you imply.
0f course SOME Muslims are stupid and ignorant, but so are SOME atheists, agnostics, etc.
Some may choose to limit their knowledge, but your question suggests that before you asked it you had limited knowledge on that area at least....and did the sensible thing in seeking further knowledge.
PS I am not a Muslim
