The police dept. doesnt usually keep the records, the DMV does. In my state, 3-7 years is the maximum, unless someone begins piling up the offenses. I saw one record that went back something like 22 years. They used that person's record as a training tool for dispatching and record access. It became so long that you couldn't access the whole thing from the computer, it had to be printed out at the DMV.

The traffic stop stays in the police system for an undisclosed amount of time. The citation is a DMV and traffic court issue. That stays on your driving record for awile. But the points from the citation are lifted after a year.

In Canada!! forever. In 2004 I am driving to Vancouver. Going through Alberta I get pulled over for speeding. I am embarrassed by the speeding ticket?? No. But I have to go to the cop shop and take care of a ticket I received in 1971 for speeding. I had to pay or the car was impounded and I wasn't going any further. Big bucks too
