I don't think that you were being rude or racist with your last question, you were just wanting to know how that came about. You weren't saying that you believed in the stereotype, you just wanted to know why it came about. I think that some people are just so quick to assume that someone is being racist, I also think that most people need to get thicker skin and quit being so damn sensitive. I wouldn't worry about it though....anyone who actually reads the question will clearly see that is all it is....a question and that you weren't try to be rude.

Well in my opinion it might be the way you phrased the question and the section you asked it in. This is a social history question, not a cultural one. Placing it in the culture section indicates that you believe it to be true- even if that is not the case. Humans are smart, humanity is missing a few bricks. The way western culture has been heading for the last- oh 200 years or so whenever anyone poses a question about a stereotype and disclaims any belief in it or connection to it in anyway this causes the assumption that the person is lying and is just placing feelers out. You can see this a lot in popular fiction from the 1920s and in a lot of early movies. Am I saying this is not the same in eastern culture? no. I don't know enough about it to venture more than a generalized opinion on human nature. Think of it as a type of pack mentality.
Mind you I'm hoping I'm not mucking this up too much here. It has been years since my social history, cultural history and logic classes. But if you honestly want to know the answer to your previous question I suggest looking up western history and read about the emigration laws of the US from the beginning and how they affected the whole us/them mentality.

If you don't want people to think you feel that all Puerto Ricans are lazy you should have phrased your question differently such as by naming a few Puerto Ricans who are very successful and them ask why people have the mistaken idea that Puerto Ricans are lazy.

noone really bashed you for that question. It wasnt asked in a racist way or anything like that. If you were really curious about why people say that its not a provocative question, at least it doesnt seem like you meant it to be.

Well it does kind of stereotype, doesn't it ? Did you really want a realistic answer? Why does any group get stereotyped ? Its a socially oversimplified opinion and should not be considered factual.

first... i don't think it was directed at you negatively... i think it was directed to whomever stated it... and stereotypes aren't always right... so don't take it personal.. I'm sure you've heard a lot of negative stereotypes about African Americans... take how many of those are true about you and then see how well you can trust a stereotype... mostly wrong... good luck.
