One of the biggest ways Grocery stores get you to buy things is by putting items on the ends of the isles (end caps). These items may not even be on sale, but many people will choose them anyway.

Some stores offer price discounts or extra Greenpoints if you buy their "store brand" products.

Putting items in the check out lanes is another way. These are called "impulse buys". When I worked at a store we cashiers got yelled at if there were empty spots in our check out displays!

The store I worked at also had hanging strips of candy & toys all over the store. Lots of parents would buy these things to keep their kids quiet. This is a reason I try not to bring my kids food shopping!

Hope this helps you!

From a marketing majors point of view:

They use "sale items" to make you think an item is on sale.

They put items on ends and on special displays.

They put corresponding products with high-margin together...next to the ice cream they will put Hershey's syrup instead of store brand. You have to go find the store brand if you want to purchase it.

They do special sales i.e. 10 for 10. Alot of people think that you have to buy 10 to get the deal.

They use the preferred customer cards to convince customers they can only get the sale price with the card. They use the data collected to analyze trends in purchasing.

Also, people generally purchase what is at eye level and to the right of eye level. Anything higher, lower or to the left is less likely to be purchased.

I think they place every day items like milk and eggs at the back of the store so you have to walk thru the whole store to get them and then do some impulse buying on the way. Also, they place items they're pushing at eye level on the shelves.

They put the milk way at the back so you have to pass by everything on the way there.

They put lots of stuff at kids-eye/hand grabbing view so they can whine and make mom and dad buy it.

They put it on end caps to encourage you to throw into your cart as you pass by.

They put it in the check out lane so your tempted whilest you're waiting forever to check out.
