First thing first, if you do not have a reason to outside of the wire, like a mission, than you will not be.
Second of all they are not going to be send band members out of combat missions, they are going to be places where it is so safe and quiet so they can play their instruments without fear of getting shot at.
Any army band regardless if its guard, reserves or active duty is part of the Adjutant General, that means they are not going to be seeing the outside of the bases. They will travel in a nice, safe manner from one base to another.
I know someone who said they were the drum major or something for 10th mountain, this was like 10 years ago when they were like 26 or something like that dont remember too well cuz we did some training together couple years back. I know another person who was in one of the reserve bands and when she got mobilized she traveled all over the US to fill in for the active army bands that went overseas.
You dont send unqualified people outside the wire, thats how people get hurt. And the finance, legal, band guys are for sure not leaving the gate without some serious firepower.

After your friend enlists and completes trainong he will be a soldier. Band members are often tasked with providing security to a "rear" area and as such spend time pulling guard duty etc. A band member is not likely to be doing any search and rescue or door kicking MOUT work but will be trained to do some of the tasks. In Iraq it is possible for a band mmber to be involved in combat actions as is evidenced by the amount of supply and maintenance soldiers who are often under fire as part of convoy duty. A soldier is a soldier and can be targeted.

Military bands perform for the troops in Iraq. They tour and provide entertainment, sort of like a concert tour.
That whole comment about NG not being as experienced as Full Time military, is largely outdated. The in the past four years, I have been off orders for about six months. We are just as experienced as our Active Duty counterparts, and in my experience we suffer less casualties, possibly due to the fact that we have more deployments than some, and are less complacent.

Everyone is deployable in all military branches whether active duty, reserves, or national guard.
Is the band member as likely to get sent to Iraq as a truck driver or weapons specialist? No, not as likely, but still possible.

I can't say about the Army. Every Marine is an 0311 infantryman by virtue of basic training. If your friend were to join the Corp, he would be deployed if needed. I imagine the Army follows similar guidlines.

once I deployed to Iraq the only element that I took with me different than uniforms and hygiene products became into my laptop laptop. Our unit became into deployed with M1A1 Abrams tanks so our tanks have been crammed crammed with some issues. We additionally had countless connexes that we've been able to deliver our kit and private products in. some people further video game consoles, books, magazines, and different small activity products.

All Army bands have a tactical mission. And that is to provide security for the headquarters they are assigned to.
If his headquarters deploys then they will be the ones guarding it.
