I am prior AF, though I should mention I got sent home directly after tech school. I say that because I couldn't really tell you what day-to-day AF life is like. In any case, I've pretty much decided to re-enlist, though I'm having a hard time deciding between the Naval Reserve, and the AF reserve. Some initial impressions:

*Both have jobs I think I'd be satisfied with so that isn't a concern. If I enlist, I'd be working in the IT field. Any rough guesses as my chances of deployment? Do they usually give you an advance notice? Or do you just get that phone call in the middle of the night?

I'm not afraid of deploying, I understand that's a risk you take when joining up, I just want to be as prepared as possible.

*Any major difference in benefits between the two? I know the Navy has the "Navy College Fund", but I'm prior service so that wouldn't apply. Past that, anything else?

I guess that's really it, any other advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

My prospective job would be 3C0X1. I've read till my eyes hurt about this, seems pretty much along the lines of what I do at my day job. Any other info anyone can provide? Also, would I have to do helpdesk?

i am still in navy active, i can tell u current navy is changing fast demand is high for especially in IT field, but saldy IT field reserve advacnement isn't good or even close to advaement time in active IT field. i pretty sure IT reserve do get somesoft of sign in bonus, guess of u get deployment is low but not unrealistic. current Navy is downsizing which mean less change u would go deploy unless a peak of war. first 2 years u are subject to anytime deploy after that u would in less chance of deploy. however navy might count reserve time as AF.if u got more than 8 years as AF reserve u chance of deploy is extreme low in the navy cause u had complete 8 years armed force obliga service. The thing about Navy E-5 above has significate much higher authority. benefit whise no or any different, u get same paid in rank. same bah, bas. only major different is that when u do u 2 week deploy per year in drill time. u might go to ship and receive sea pay which af don't offer. but that money is very little. I sure IT field in reseve shall had better chance advace than AF. also major diff in navy than af. navy don;t just deal ship, as IT u can be be pretty much any field in the Navy, like aviation, ships, seabee, supply, etc..

Prior navy. Go in the AR if you like some what normal work hours (8 a day or so). The navy doesn't treat their people quit as good but man at the places you go.

As far as AF, i wouldnt go reserve with a job in IT. Becuase most stateside bases in which you will be reporting at are contrat maintence. which means you will most likely be working on tactical equiptment. If you go in go active, and get stationed overseas, maintence is still done by bluesuiters.
