Plastic is harmful to the environment insofar as it is not biodegradable, and will remain largely unchanged for centuries to come (unless recycled, which is rare for bags.) Also, our oceans (and the stomachs of many of the large creatures that inhabit them) are full of plastic. And, for what it's worth, plastic is made from oil, its over-use exacerbates oil dependency.

They take longer to rot away than paper ones do. (But then again your groceries don't rip them and fall through the bottom in the supermarket parking lot on a rainy day like paper ones do.)
