A real diamond will have some imperfections inside it when you look at it through a magnifying glass, cubic zirconia won't have the same imperfections and will be much cleaner looking than a diamond.

Otherwise, take it to a reputable jeweller to have it identified for sure. I found a big stone in the parking lot a few months back, and I was sure that I hit paydirt. But, it turned out to be a cubic zirconia. It was upsetting too, the jeweller said if it had been real it would have been worth $9,000, but since it was a Z, it was only worth about $7.00.

Good luck with it.

To be honest, it is virtually impossible to the layman to tell them apart. It takes an expert or instruments to tell C.Z. and Diamond apart, usually with special instruments like a refractometer, which measures the angle at which light bounces off.

But when place side by side, it seems that the cubic zirconia has the higher lustre (shinyness). This is because it is synthetic, and unlike a natural stone has no inclusions. Lack of these inclusions is extremely rare in natural stones.
Cubic Zirconia are also considerably heavier (65% heavier).

So, the short answer is, you can't. Not unless you have the two side by side, and even then, it's very hard for someone without experience to tell which is which.

They could take it to a jeweler who knows what to look for using a magnifier.

i think you can try setting fire to it. diamond burns, apparantly. plus, diamond is the hardest substance, so you could try cutting stuff with it if this is only for theory

a real diamond will cut glass or a mirror....not scratch it but actually cut/grove it.

only a real diamond can do this.
