The term Jesus is the reason for the season was coined in churches to motivate pew members to get involved in the inflamation of the spirit, if you get what I mean. there are certain preachers who believe that you have to preach in such a way that sets them on fire and gets them higher. Jesus is the reason for the season sounds good. And they promote Jesus' birthday in the manger (nativity). But Jesus was obviously not born december 25.

One joke (im christian, by the way).. Do you know why Joseph and Mary couldn't find any rooms at the Inn? It was Christmas for God's sake!

But I dont mind spending craploads of money to buy my kids christmas gifts and give them memories that will last a lifetime

I have no idea what George Bush has to do with Christmas. I am no fan of Bush. A lot of people misinterpret biblical guidelines.
The Christian right has no business implementing its 'Christian laws' unto others. I wonde why people don't worry about the religious right in America. They are eroding democracy, social programs and civil rights.

I don't think people should smoke marijuana, but I don't see the point of arresting someone for it. Is that what you mean?

As for Christmas, it is like non-Christians who want Sunday off. You aren't religious and don't spend the time with your family. If you got Saturday off from work, you could work Sunday if you aren't Christian. You insist on having the whole weekend off but you are not Christian. It must be Sunday, must be every Sunday and preferably the whole weekend. Yet you are not Christian...

Well I guess it depends on "who" is saying it! Obviously, someone who's saying Jesus is the reason for the season, clearly has more than presents in mind this time of year.....I can't speak for the government, however.
EDIT:
UM, What in the world does the death penalty have to do with Christmas? Pick a subject; ANY subject, and stick with it.

A lot of people are into the buying Christmas in a store. Jesus is the reason of the season and presents took over. I buy some gifts, but the reason we should celebrate Christmas is because the Son of God was born to save the world and that is the best gift of all time (literally)

You sound very cynical... I feel for you.

Perhaps in your world this is true, but where I live Jesus really is the reason for the season.

Would you be so kind as to provide the scripture that says we should "do what the government wants"? I think you and I both know that is not in the bible. What it DOES say is that we should obey the law.

Jesus is the reason for the DAY. Not the SEASON. The reason for the season is the Earth's tilt away from the sun in its orbit, so the Winter Solstice is MUCH more the reason for the season.

Bright blessings.

it's a great quote for those of us who lose perspective during this hustle-bustle time. everyone, literally knows the true meaning behind christmas, but wth all the commercialism that has impact this holy of holydays, an overpowering secular connotation has snuck in to de-emphasize the religious meaning assciated with christmas.
i don't have a problem with the buying and gifting. jesus taught us to love our neighbor. what better way than to give them a token gesture during the holiday season.

The world is still alive today because Jesus was born on Christmas Day! Spending wisely is good for the economy. So be it!

That is exactly why Christians have coined the phrase - they want Jesus to be remembered - not the commercialism.
