I had a smiliar problem. Someone sugessted ..ewido.net.
it is a spyware/ malware scanner... but there is asection marked tools ... there you can see what starts when you turn the PC on... Sometimes even if yuo delete something from the startmenu.. there is a command and it ends up right back there. This usually kept them from restarting again. there is a free 30day trial and you can choose to purchase... but for the 30 you get all features.. and the scanner stays with the free version. IT was worth my money and time GOOD LUCK!

Start by dumping the conetnts of the C:\windows\prefetch folder, then do an msconfig and turn off everything you dont constantly use on a dayly basis from auto start, error check (used to be called scan disk) and defrag your drive, run Spybot S&D or ad-aware, and you'll be amazed!

If you have a cable/DSL or other connection that is otherwise never turned off, it could be updates that are taking so long. My computer takes forever to start up because Windows, Norton Antivirus and Spydweeper are all checking for updates.

Install Winpatrol and Security Task Manager.
STM is shareware on a 30 day trial, but winpatrol is free. It will effectively manage your startup folder.
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/securitytask.html - Security task manager

And don't forget all those Windows updates and hotfixes, they soon add up:)
