roughly.....if u have a 9' tall wall and add 1' for the floor joist ur looking at 15 stairs....and a upper landing....tip:

u take the height and convert it into inches

9 + 1 = 10' = 120 "

divided the height by the rise of the stairs( height of ur step)...a good # is 7 1/2" rise( ur looking for a whole number)

so, 120" divided by 7.5" = 16 risers

take one off for the landing if u like and u get 15

so it will take 16 steps with no landing or last step flush with landing or 15 steps if u build a landing and drop down 7.5" from th top of the landing for ur first step....

u can also figure the length of the stairs: if using 15 stairs it will be 150 inches long from a level point from the upper landing to the floor and then measure out 150"....thing of a triangle....

Generally you might use a 7.5 inch riser and a 1ft step tread. So 9 feet is 108 inches, therefore you will need 14.4 steps or adjust the riser to 7.2 inches and use 15 steps. You may need to account for the floor joists as well.

Check you codes to see what the max riser dimension is and this would give you the shortest run of steps if space is a concern.

Usually according to building Dept 9' height ceiling is minimum standard. You cannot build upstairs or mezzanine floor. If you like to do at your own,you can do it,but well prepared for big penalty and to destroy the stair you constructed. Before you wanted to do any thing or like to make a change in your building design, consult your City Bldg dept for their approval.

Two risers and one tread should equal about twenty six inchs. if you get somthing much different you're going to have a hard climb.
GO do the math.
