I would say that if the U.S. had never helped China in the early 40's that Japan would have been pretty much unstoppable. The flying tigers did a lot of good to help the Chinese forces, also we did a lot of supplying over the himalayas since the japanese had captured the road in burma. If we hadn't have nuked them, they would have kept fighting for a long time. Japan still had a million men in China when they surrendered in 1945. Thats a lot of guys. Imagine how many more they could have had if they hadn't been used to stock up islands like okinawa, iwo jima, palau, the philipines, guadalcanal, and tarawa. They would not have needed such big forces there if they were not expecting invasions from american forces. Those men could have been redirected to push further into china. Japan had superior equipment compared to the materials not supplied by the allies. They had air superiority as well. Even if the chinese had managed to stop them, they would have pushed incredibly far into the mainland probably they would never have been able to be pushed completely out. Nowdays maps would be drastically different than they are now. The short answer, no. I do not think china could have beat japan on its own.

The People's Liberation Army could beat japan, since they have nukes... but the Japanese do have Aegis cruisers to defend against ICBMs. EVENTUALLY, after a long time China might win because of numerical superiority, but not without millions of losses on both sides. On the other hand, Japan might be able to turn Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, etc against China, but i doubt that.

It would be a long bloody war ...

If China used a war of attrition they would definitely win due to pure numbers, but due to the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan the US would intervene.

Of course, the numbers alone are obvious, but I doubt we would stand bye, because we have a big percentage of military personel and bases located in japan.

well unsure now since it your talkin about the 40's not present day. I guess id have to go with Japan. The only reason is cause they had control over a huge portion of the pacific. Along with their navy, being able to control the flow of goods.

No.

They have a small problem of getting to Japan.

Unless they have all learned how to walk on water (and are ready to walk a long way) they really cannot do much to Japan.
