With tobacco one of the most highly regulated industries around today, are cigarettes not being unfairly discriminated against versus some of the other "time-bomb" products out there - fast food, confectionery, alcohol, petrol driven cars, ...etc?

and check out new headline on Obesity:

I wonder how long it will be before studies reveal even more far-reaching effects of things like obesity & alcoholism on society? Given the huge disparity in regulation between these and tobacco, I wonder if the smoking thing will ultimately prove to be a mere puff of smoke...?

I agree. In the UK tho its a battle between the money gained in tax from selling them compared to cost in health related problems caused by smoking. Interesting fact is the revenue taken in the UK is about 4 times the actual spent. So being a smoker is actually good for the country! Without cigarette tax other taxes would have to go up. In response to some comments claiming other things dont impact like passive smoking (unproved scientifically BTW) i would like to comment on alcohol abuse and the impact that has on society. I think alcohol has a far more damaging side than cigarettes. The violence, the extra policing, the anti social behaviour. The list is endless. I would far rather be in a room full of smokers than a room full of drunk people! END OF!

Not really, they are exempt from having to declare the ingredients in their product on their packaging. Every other consumable has to do so. Even McDonalds has probably got a book with all their products and the ingredients used in them somewhere in the manager's office in case someone should ask.
How effective do you think it would be to discourage new smokers from taking up smoking by declaring all the chemicals on their packaging. Probably would be too efective; which is why they don't have to. T
They even seem above European law on that one. And can you think of anything else that gets away from European legislation??

The government want thier cake and eat it with smokers - tax cigerettes to the max to make the maximum amount of tax profit from them and then tell people its bad amd we're drainng the NHS - bollox is what I say. Up the tax on drinking, fast food junk and everything else unhealthy xx

Cigarettes are being unfairly discriminated against only because they are still legal... they are worse than all the other things you mentioned. I would love it if they were considered as dangerous a drug as cocaine or heroin, because they are just as addictive.

You are so right. And smokers are discriminated against, I don't like watching fatties eat burgers, sweets and coke and its bad for them - that should be banned in public.
