Cycle helmets are NOT really crash impact rated. They just get dropped o simulate FALLING off a bike - not coliding with a car at 30 or 50mph.

Personally, I ALWAYS wear when offroad, but never on road as it's protection is much reduced with the generally higher speeds.

ps. i've walked away from several high speed RTA's on a cycle without a helmet - do around 7000miles a year all on road commuting & training.

"Head injuries cause three-quarters of about 900 bicycle deaths each year, according to the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, a helmet advocacy program of the Washington, D.C.-area Bicyclist Association." - However, it does not say if the people involved in these injuries were wearing helmets or not - and I believe this is for America, not England. However, the discrepancy between 38% and 75% seems a lot.

Probably a little higher than the percentage of survivors that were not wearing helmets.

The statistics mentioned here are a good determination of how many people actually take precautions, but doesn't prove that helmets help. I think you need to ask what percentage of those that wear helmets were seriously injured, compared to what percentage of those that don't wear helmets and were seriously injured.

how many died and how many are in a wheelchair for life or eating their food through a straw? Wear the helmet, they're not that expensive when you consider what the outcome could be.
