Give him the five hundred and owe him five hundred. If you talk to him with cash in hand, he will probably accept it. Make him sign something, too, if you can.

Do you not have insurance? This would fall under collision, so if he has a $1000 estimate and let's just say you have a $500 collision deductible, then HELLO, you're only going to have to pay $500 of that estimate which is all you're willing to pay anyway right? The total claim amount is less than $1500, and, at most companies, that's considered a small claim and your insurance rate more than likely will not be affected.
If it were me, I'd call the insurance company in, whether he wants to or not. Otherwise, you could be setting yourself up for endless bills with this guy. He can always come back and say you didn't pay for the damages or some crap. People are tricky. If you do this out of pocket you'd be wise to have him sign a document releasing you of all liability after repairs are completed. Have him sign it before a notary and give him a copy and keep one for yourself.
Call your agent and explain the situation, they can advise you on what to do. My guess is that you don't have full coverage, or else you'd have already filed the claim.

Well you are between a rock and a hard spot now. Most of the time when they are not injured they will try to settle with you for repair and add a little on extra knowing you dont want to go thru you insurance.

You need to go through the insurance. That way he gets what he's entitled to, to make him whole, and nothing else. You are exposed to much to other potential claims if you do it this way. Out of pocket settlements don't work out, I've learned that over my many years in claims.

It is his right to have his car fixed to look exactly like it was before you hit him.
Can you find someone to paint it the right color for you?
Have you offered to just give him the cash? Maybe he'll take that.
Good luck! And drive safely!

You are responsible for getting his vehicle back to pre-loss condition. A different colored door is DEFINATELY not doing so. You need to either pay him for quality repairs or suck it up and call your insurance..
