This is hard since the 4 month old can not sit up yet. I have searched for ideas online and i can not find any ideas anyplace! Plus they will both be dressed up in thier xmas outfits and i want a tradional firplace & xmas tree background. HELP???

Try the bean bag drapped with someithing plain but hide some sultanas or something of interest near or under the baby and get the 3 yr old to find them and show you and act all surprised each time they find something. I did this with a 2yr old and the resulting expression were fantastic. Especially with him looking at the baby and pointing......... no-one knew the baby had sultanas hiding around him!!!!

Last christmas I took pictures of my 1 month old cousin. I had her sitting on a blanket with someone supporting her back with their hand. Then i put presents around the person's hand so you couldn't see it and took some pictures that way.
The carseat ideas are really good, just find some fabric or something to drape over the carseat so it doesn't look like a carseat. Then you can go from there.
You can also just have the 3 yr old to hold the baby, but make sure someone is close by just in case.

Use a beanbag chair that way you can get both of them on it and close together. Have the baby laying down in the beanbag chair (form it so that s/he is sitting up some) and have the older sibling laying his/her head next to baby or squatting next to baby and so forth. That's probably going to be your best shot. At the studio I worked at, that's what we did. Place a white sheet over the bean bag so as not to distract from the Christmas outfits. make sure mom or dad is just off camera to catch the kids in case they roll too much!

Keep the four month old in his car seat and hand him reins that go off camera to play with. (Sleigh)
The most typical set up is where you have the three year old holding the 4 month old on lap. I have a picture like that where I was 5 months old.

Instead of showing the lil ones opening up their toys you should set a bunch of toys around the tree and have the babies coming out of the presents. put the lil guy in his car seat with a box just a bit bigger all wrapped so it surrounding him. Im not sure exactly how it should work but if you play around with it you might really surprise yourself. goodluck
