They are both part of the pharmaceutical group benzodiazepine. While Xanax will hit your harder (and quicker), Valium has a longer elimination half life (will stay in your system longer) and have less of a withdrawal effect.
Here are the dosage equivilants for each benzodiazepine.
1mg Ativan = 0.5mg Klonopin = 25mg Librium = 15mg Tranxene = 10mg Valium = 0.5mg Xanax.

That would really depend on what is called it's half life, as well as the dosage. Some drugs stay in your system a little longer than others. Either way, expect to be drowsy and do not take except for the plane trip and only if your doctor prescribed this. Ask your doctor, not here.
They are both in the same category.
If you are afraid of flying, Xanax is used a lot for panic attacks. Again, ask your doctor. And follow the instructions. DO NOT DRINK while taking this type of drug.

They both are tranquilizers but the strongest of the two is valium. I know from personal experience. Also i heard alot of people getting seizures from Xanax so i would stick with valium. Both of them are highly addictive drugs. Honestly this question is going to bring alot of debate because i think that both these drugs affect people in different ways so one drug might work better for one person and not so well for the next. So good luck with whatever you choose.
