As far as photosynthesis is concern, oxygen is a waste product. It doesn't play any part in photosynthesis.

For respiration, oxygen is the final acceptor of electrons (being reduced to water). Electrons are moved from food molecules as they are oxidized to CO2. Those electrons have to ultimately be given to something. That something (for aerobic organisms, anyway) is oxygen.
