My friend was recently prescribed paxil for anxiety, she's on Day 4 and she's concerned because she has to force herself to eat anything at all, and it feels like all of her sences are in overload - the room is always too bright, and loud noises are almost too much to handle. Are these syptoms normal?

She may be on too high of a dose. I had trouble eating the first few days I took it and was even sick to my stomach but after 2 weeks of taking it I felt fine and in fact gained a lot of weight. She should definately be talking to her doctor. They will probably tell her that the side effects should go away after a week if they do not then they will probably try a different medication. I hope this helps, I know it must be a struggle for her right now.

Have her call her doctor. There are many alternatives and Paxil can have extreme responses in some people. She shouldn't stop it unless her doctor tells her to but her doctor needs to be aware of these side effects.

It it were me, I would refuse Paxil and try ANYTHING else. I have seen too many serious/life threatening mental problems in people the first two weeks of taking Paxil. It's not worth it.

The first week or two on any antidepressant is not always great. After that, the side effects are a lot less. Yes, loss of appetite is normal in the first few days, but then a lot of people gain weight the following weeks when their appetite returns. Here's a list of what people had to say about the drug, good and bad

Have her go to the site below. Every answer is there. We have tons of medical info, side effects, problems, and anecdotal evidence having to deal with the horrors of Paxil. She may be a non-metabolizer.

I would imagine as with any other drug they interact differently with everyone. In my case I ate like a hog! Typically with anti depressants/anti anxiety medications you gain a bit of wait. I have never however heard of anyone who has "senses overload" and your right...these are not typical side effects. I would have your friend call her doctor.

Paxil is known to cause mania. It triggered a breakdown in my case.

It did the same thing to me. Tell the doctor... she needs to get off of it and on something else.

i took it a year or so ago, and although i didnt have those symptoms, its possible. Maybe she should ask her doctor, but tell her to keep taking it.
