I had long hair up until about 20 when I had it cut into a bob. Aside from having a man that I never met walk up to me in the store I worked at almost in tears because my long locks were gone, it really wasn't a big issue at all. I did have to figure out how to do short hair though. I'd advise you to ask your hairdresser to help you out with styling.
Try putting your hair up so it looks short and see what you think about it. Photoshop yourself with short hair and even go out and buy a wig. If you really like it, then go for the chop! If not, at least you can play around with some other options and have fun with the wig. (You might want to seek out a new person to do your hair though if you're worried that she won't do a good job.)
My best advice is to not worry too much about it. It's only hair and it grows back. Even if it's a really bad cut, in a month it will have grown out to a point where you can get it fixed.

When I got my long hair cut short, I was miserable. I couldn't figure out what to do with it or how to wear it and without all the weight that it had been used to, it frizzed and bushed out.
If I were you, I would cut it just a few inches at a time, incrementally. That way, if at any point you feel like it's too short, you won't have to wait as long for it to grow out. Go at least a week between each cutting to see how you wear it and find out if you have any styling problems with it.

Why don't you cut a LITTLE at a time.. Until you get it where you want it.. Try below your shoulders and work UP.. if you are that nervous about it. You can always have more taken off but if you cut it that short, you cant put it back on your head.

First, try a haircut a little below the shoulders. Maybe try a cut which is consider both long and short.... I'm talking about layers and more layers. This way, you can pull back the longer hair underneath, and you'll see how you'll look with the shorter hair.
Something like this:

http://www.ukhairdressers.com/style/index2.asp?R1=7761&month1=1&pg=1&styl1=Essensuals
http://www.ukhairdressers.com/style/index2.asp?R1=6336&month1=1&pg=1&styl1=Racoon%20Intl
http://www.ukhairdressers.com/style/index2.asp?R1=6730&month1=1&pg=1&styl1=HOB%20Salons
http://www.ukhairdressers.com/style/index2.asp?R1=3427&month1=1&pg=1&styl1=Matrix
Hope theese will give you some inspiration. And when you get used to the shorter style, you can go even shorter..If not, it will not take as long to grow it out.

why not start of cutiing a little bit at a time until you happy or just try another hair color. You could always have fun by going to a wig shop and try on short hair styles to see which one you think is best, before you think of cutting you hair too short.

I am sure it will feel different- your head will feel lighter. Try getting it shorter gradually if you are that worried. Layers would be the easiest and they grow back quickly if you are unhappy with the look
